Germany and France are partnering to construct a supercomputer with the ability to carry out one billion billion computations per second.

France and Germany have partnered to create Jupiter, a supercomputer expected to cost 500 million euros with the capability of processing over one billion billion calculations. The project is a collaboration between France's Eviden and Germany's ParTec. The Jupiter supercomputer will run on a SiPearl Rhea processor and utilize ARM architecture and acceleration technology from Nvidia. The Jülich Supercomputing Center in Germany will operate the machine, which is expected to support the development of high-fidelity models in complex systems. Its applications include solving problems related to climate change, pandemics, fusion energy, AI services and big data analysis. The construction timeline for the project has not been released.

Supercomputers are giant computer systems that have millions of times more computing power compared to conventional computers, making them capable of solving complex world problems. In the past, these computers have been used in various fields such as simulating nuclear missile tests, weather forecasting, climate research, and testing computer encryption strength. In 2021, the world's first exascale supercomputer, Frontier, was born and is manufactured by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee (USA). Meanwhile, Europe's fastest supercomputer is Lumi, owned by EuroHPC JU, located in the CSC data center in Kajaani (Finland) from 2021, reaching 375 quadrillion calculations per second, ranking third in the world.

Recently, technology companies such as Facebook and Google have also participated in developing supercomputers with the goal of serving AI research. However, traditionally, supercomputers have been dominated by the US and China, not only for industrial purposes but also for military research.
