According to a notice on the website on December 18, the EC has "opened formal proceedings" against X under the Digital Services Act (DSA). Europe adopted the DSA and took effect in August, requiring social media platforms to have effective and transparent moderation systems with the goal of removing false or harmful information.
The investigation will focus on how Elon Musk's social network spreads illegal content and the censorship mechanisms to prevent that content, including the green check verification mechanism.
"The opening of proceedings against EC said. "We now have clear rules: prioritize duty, intense surveillance, swift enforcement, and deterrent sanctions. We will make the most of everything to protect citizens and democracy ".
According to Business Insider, the EC's move shows how strongly X is being monitored in Europe. The investigation results could cause this social network to face a fine of 6% of global revenue.
X said the platform remains committed to DSA compliance and cooperates with regulators. "X is focused on creating a safe and inclusive environment for all users while protecting freedom of expression, and we will continue to work tirelessly to achieve this goal," representative X said.
In September, Europe warned that X was the social network with the highest rate of false information, calling on billionaire Elon Musk to comply with union laws. "X is the platform with the largest proportion of articles containing false information," EC Vice President Vera Jourova said on September 26. "Ranked right behind X is Meta's Facebook."
On October 19, Bloomberg reported that Musk was considering blocking X in Europe in response to the EC having some platform requirements to comply with censorship regulations. However, he later denied it.
After taking over Twitter last year, the American billionaire pledged to turn the platform into a "digital community square where many views can be debated healthily." However, many activists are concerned about the rise of online harassment and misinformation. Musk himself often teases and mocks other X users.
